The Environmental Protection Agency's new rules on the construction of new power plants will please radical environmentalists and Democratic donors in the "green energy" business, but the consequences will be devastating to the coal industry and America's energy economy.

The EPA's proposed New Source Performance Standard, unveiled Friday, would require new coal-fired power plants to meet emissions standard of 1,100 pounds of carbon dioxide per megawatt hour. That represents a significant reduction from the roughly 1,800 pounds released per hour by coal-fired power plants operating with modern technology.

If finalized, the new standards will block construction of new coal-fired power plants. Further exacerbating our energy problem, the agency is expected to release even stricter new regulations in 2014 to limit carbon dioxide emissions through carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) - a technology that involves capturing the greenhouse gas and burying it underground to prevent the gas from escaping into the atmosphere.

http://www.realclearenergy.org/articles/2013/09/27/obamas_war_on_coal_has_run_amok_107263.html"}}
