Common Core Prepares a 21st Century Workforce

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the business community is a strong supporter of the Common Core State Standards. It also shouldn’t come as a surprise why they support higher standards and deeper learning: it’s getting tougher and tougher to find workers who can succeed in the 21st century workforce. Our competitive global economy requires a change in how we prepare students for today’s jobs. Yet, as the world continues to make advances, the American education system seems to stand still. 

We’ve all seen the numbers—U.S. students place 17th in reading, 21st in science, and 26th in math globally. The skills gap in America is widening. The latest numbers from the U.S. Department of Labor indicate that there are nearly 5 million open jobs across the country—the highest level since January 2001. 

But, let’s put aside the statistics and facts for a moment and take a look at what the Common Core State Standards do differently to foster student learning.
