From The New York Times, a map showing the likelihood that a child born into the lowest income quintile will rise to the highest:

What jumped out to me is that the numbers don't seem to account for cost of living -- someone who becomes wealthy in a low-cost-of-living area will live quite well, but might not be in the top fifth nationwide -- but the researchers say making that adjustment doesn't significantly alter their findings.
