Pension Reform in San Jose

Chuck Reed has been mayor of San Jose since 2006, prior to which time he served on the San Jose city council. Before entering public service, Mayor Reed had a long and varied career as an attorney in private practice, and served in the Air Force. Mayor Reed has recently become known as a national leader in the pension reform movement. In June 2012, he persuaded 70 per cent of San Jose voters to approve Measure B, one of the more substantial pension reforms any government has implemented in recent years. Mayor Reed just announced that he intends to follow up the success he had at the local level with a similar statewide pension reform initiative, currently titled the “Pension Reform Act of 2014.” This Thursday, October 24th, Mayor Reed will be speaking at the Manhattan Institute’s conference “Save Our Cities-Reforming Public Pensions to Protect Public Services,” which will be live-streamed here on Public Sector Inc.

Public Sector Inc. editor Steve Eide recently interviewed Mayor Reed about the “Pension Reform Act of 2014,” and pension reform more generally. Below is an edited transcript.
