Tick Tock, Trump's Regulatory Clock

When President Trump takes to the podium for his second State of the Union address this evening, he will likely mention his deregulatory achievements and reiterate his promises to achieve lasting cuts. He may not appreciate that, although he is only half-way through the term, he may already be running out of time.

By any measure, the Trump administration has issued dramatically fewer regulations than previous administrations during their first two years. The Federal Register—the daily compendium of new regulations and notices—printed 20,000 fewer pages in 2017 and 2018 than it did during President Obama's first two years.
