Calling John Roberts' Bluff

On June 27, the Supreme Court ruled that a question asking about U.S. citizenship status may not be added to the 2020 census. Chief Justice John Roberts held that although the question itself is valid, the Trump administration's rationale for appending it is not. Early the following week, therefore, Department of Justice lawyers informed the judges overseeing lawsuits against the question's inclusion that census forms would be printed without it. The White House, to all appearances, had waved the white flag and surrendered.

There was just one problem. No one had told the septuagenarian real estate tycoon who calls the White House home. Enraged, he tore the flag from the hands of his underlings and trampled it into the dirt.
