Want to Be President? Draw Sharp Contrast with Your Rivals

Brad Parscale, Trump's 2020 campaign chair, distilled the essence of a political campaign into the following blunt description: “You take your position. You stay strong with it.”

As a statement engineered to score high on the Conventional Political Wisdom scale, and to elicit knowing approval from the political consultant class, Parscale succeeds.

Yet as an actual thesis?

When it comes to protracted events as complex and multidimensional as national elections, generalities like that are vague to the point of meaninglessness. What does it mean to “take your position”? What does it look like to “stay strong with it”?
