Feminism and Conservatism Are Not Incompatible

Without fail, the question I’ve received most over the years is, “How can you be a conservative and a feminist?”

It’s not surprising that many find this combination impossible. Certainly, people in both movements have contributed to this misconception through public attempts to exclude people like me.

But conservatism and feminism are not incompatible. On the contrary, they share many commonalities stemming from a shared focus on the individual.

Both ideologies emphasize the individual’s dignity, freedom, potential, independence, and self-reliance. They advocate for individualism from the state. They champion individual responsibility and the ability for each individual to make the best choice for themselves — and, perhaps most importantly, they both recognize that this decision won’t be the same for every individual.
