Breaking the Grip of White Grievance
The
month of March staggered us. Joe Biden, with his campaign on a ventilator, was revived as the likely Democratic nominee. A soaring economy, primed in theory at least to spur an incumbent president to a second term, ran into a global pandemic. Paper riches fizzled in 50 million retirement plans. Donald Trump’s performance stuttered, as did his post-impeachment swagger.
If nothing else, 2020 has underscored the adage that a month, a week—a weekend—can be a lifetime in politics. Humility in analysis, and caution in augury, are advised. Yet somehow, amid the noise and fast-moving news-and-crisis cycle, there is clarity.
