Joe Biden has picked Kamala Harris to be his vice president. Harris, the junior senator for California and Biden’s former rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, got the nod over former national security advisor Susan Rice, Georgia’s almost-governor Stacey Abrams, last-minute-Fidel-Castro-distancer and California Rep. Karen Bass, Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar, whom Biden trounced for the nomination, and others.
In picking her, Biden overlooked Harris’s strong criticisms of him during the primaries — including her expression of disappointment that Biden once worked together with segregationists in Congress and her belief that at least some of the women accusing Biden of sexual misconduct were telling the truth. Based on his VP criteria — must be a woman, must be someone he’s “simpatico” with, must be someone whose governing capabilities he trusts — Biden went with Harris.
