Transgressive art matters. The disruption of social norms can lead to their being refreshed, reaffirmed and, occasionally, improved upon. I say this as both a writer of transgressive fiction and a fan of transgressive art in most of its forms.
Transgressive art is especially important for advancing the concerns of the marginalized, for piercing through majoritarian indifference, and for rousing us all from our neoliberalism-induced moral stupor.
