Election officials were thrown a major curveball by COVID-19 earlier this year, as it became apparent that the globally rampaging virus, and our domestic response to it, had the potential to reverberate at least through to Election Day. They had some difficult decisions to make. Had this been our first-ever concern with the pace at which we count votes, or had officials demonstrated that they even recognized that a problem was looming, we might have let it slide.
Unfortunately, in many states, an attitude that the counting will take as long as it takes set in early. On top of that, we were told that quick counts were not an appropriate thing to expect, and that as long as the totals come in by the December certification deadlines nobody should have any legitimate cause for complaint.
