In many ways, the 2020 election was an eerie case of history repeating itself. Just like in 2016, the race was far closer than national polling anticipated, leaving pundits scrambling to understand how pollsters could’ve gotten it so wrong. Just like in 2016, the election outcome itself has been called into question by Donald Trump’s repeated Twitter-based shrieking about rigged races and stolen votes. A key difference, of course, is that Trump did not win the 2020 election — but we’re just sort of ignoring that part, lest it interfere with the takes.

Victorious or not, we on the left remain deeply concerned about the 50 percent or so of the country who pulled the lever for the other guy. And so, just like in 2016, a villainous blob emerges: no, not the one squatting lumpily behind the Resolute Desk, but the undifferentiated mass of white ladies who voted to put him there.
