To the relief of parents, students and teachers, as COVID-19 subsides across the United States, school districts are planning to resume fully in-person learning this fall. At the same time, as with the reopening of the workplace, after more than a year of experimenting with remote learning, innovative, online practices are emerging that can transform K-12 education for the better — and address the achievement gaps at home and with other advanced economies.
If we identify and harness online best practices, the disruptions of the pandemic provide us the opportunity to reimagine a more effective, resilient and equitable educational system. If policymakers and education leaders do not creatively take advantage of the opportunities that the accelerated infusion of technology into K-12 education have opened up, they will have let down current and future generations. These advances are long overdue and necessary for the US workforce to remain globally competitive.
