During the days of the Trump administration, cousins Sonny and David Perdue were able to build a system of protectionism for growers in Georgia thanks to their political clout and the Republican president’s system of tariffs.
They helped push a series of investigations into fruit and vegetable imports that continue to this day. So far, none of those inquiries have found any serious injury to growers in the U.S.
Sonny Perdue, Republican governor of Georgia from 2003 to 2011, received the nod from Trump to serve as secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture after the 45th president’s inauguration. He was confirmed to the post in April 2017, receiving one of his yes votes from his cousin David, recently elected as Georgia’s junior senator and serving as a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee.
