When lawmakers drafted Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act in 1996, they couldn’t have predicted the explosive growth of the internet or the ubiquitous role it would play in our everyday lives. They also couldn’t have anticipated that their 26-word provision would help make the internet we’ve all come to know and rely on possible.
Today, approximately 93 percent of American adults are now online and dependent on the internet for nearly every aspect of our lives. From remote work to social connection, Section 230 — a law that protects online services from liability based on third party, user-generated content — has enabled the internet to flourish and become a place of limitless possibility.
