The global chip shortage has taken an especially devastating toll in Michigan. Supply chain problems have forced automakers that survived the Great Recession a decade ago to halt production and even lay off many workers. American semiconductor companies, like Intel and others, are working hard to address these critical problems.
But we need a whole-of-government approach to level the playing field so that our most innovative companies – none more important than our automakers – can use their intellectual property to create jobs, expand their operations, and produce the goods and services we all rely on in our daily lives.
