Doomsaying pundits are right about one thing: Our electoral institutions need reform. But so does their rhetoric — and their proposed remedies.
Both parties cast aspersions on our election system. While the right spotlights the snags making some Americans question the integrity of their vote, the left cites those barriers blocking too many from having a voice at all. Meanwhile, third party candidates get the short shrift as “spoilers” bulldozing through an otherwise democratic process. Turns out “saving democracy” stops just short of expanding the democratic forum.
