We’re better than ever at fighting cancer. According to a recent study, the cancer death rate in the U.S. has fallen 33% since 1991, corresponding to an estimated 3.8 million lives saved. In addition, the five-year relative survival rate for cancer has increased from 49% in the mid-1970s to 68% during 2012 - 2018.
In other words, while you were very likely to have known someone who died from cancer 50 years ago, you’re more likely to know someone who survived it today.
Thanks to a combination of factors — from successful anti-smoking campaigns and a stronger emphasis on preventative care to new medicines and medical technologies — we’ve won some major battles and saved the lives of millions.
