Five Facts on Biden and Trump Poll Numbers
One year out from the 2024 presidential election, all signs point to President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump facing off again in a rematch of the 2020 election. Each candidate has historically poor poll numbers, which is but one reason No Labels believes there is a historic opening for an independent presidential ticket to win in 2024.
Here are Five Facts on Trump and Biden poll numbers that might shape the 2024 presidential election.
- Both Biden and Trump have negative favorability ratings.
Biden's approval rating stands at only 37 percent according to a Gallup national poll, matching a record low of his presidency. Meanwhile, a full 63 percent of voters have an unfavorable view of former President Trump according to a July 2023 Pew poll.
- Only half of all Republicans and 39 percent of Democrats strongly approve of their likely nominees.
Only half of Republicans have a “very favorable” view of Trump according to a September Harvard/Harris poll. And while 85 percent of Democrats still approve of Joe Biden, that figure marks the lowest point in his presidency as the party increasingly divides over the administration’s response to key issues like immigration and the war in Israel.
- Nearly two-thirds of Americans say more parties are needed in American politics.
Recent polls show that most Americans believe more political parties are needed, with the support for a third party increasing from 56 percent in September 2022 to 63 percent in September 2023, according to Gallup.
- Almost two-thirds of voters do not want a rematch between Trump and Biden, according to a June Economist/YouGov poll.
According to the poll, a total of 59 percent of voters do not want President Biden to seek reelection, with only 26 percent in favor of him running for a second term. Former President Trump received similar levels of disfavor, with 56% of voters not wishing for him to run again, and 33 percent supporting another Trump candidacy. Among independents, the opposition to either candidate running again was even higher, with 64 percent against Biden and 59 percent against Trump running again.
